Scientists became interested in proanthocyanidins and resveratrol in the early 1990s when its presence was discovered in red wine leading to speculations that it might explain the so-called "French Paradox" - low heart disease rates among the French who consume high-fat diets and drink quite a bit of red wine. Since then scientific interest in these compounds has continued to grow and further studies have shown they may have a host of health benefits.
Proanthocyanidins (PAs), are phytochemicals, which are non-nutritive plant chemicals that have protective properties. PAs are enormously powerful immune supportive antioxidants that remove harmful free oxygen radicals from cells. Studies indicate that antioxidant power of PAs is 20 times higher than that of vitamin C and 50 times higher than vitamin E. These findings do not make PAs better antioxidants than vitamins C and E and does not mean they replace them. Instead, they highlight the importance of a variety of antioxidant types. The role of PAs should not be underestimated, as research further suggests that these compounds are beneficial in many areas of health, most notably in relationship to cardio health (may help improve blood circulation by strengthening capillaries, arteries, and veins). Additionally, published studies show that grape seed extract exerted a beneficial impact on blood pressure (National Center for Biotechnology Information- US National Library of Medicine-National Institutes of Health). Additionally, because of their ability to bond with collagen they promote skin cell health, elasticity, and flexibility.
Resveratrol is also a phytochemical, or non-nutritive plant chemical that has protective properties. Resveratrol is most known for its strong immune-supportive antioxidant properties. Studies have also shown links to healthy cholesterol and blood pressure levels. It has been tagged the antiaging compound after animal studies suggested an increased lifespan and memory performance (Journal of Neuroscience, 4 June 2014). Coupled with additional animal studies that indicate a potential protective influence on joint cartilage and anti-inflammatory influences, resveratrol remains a strong candidate for further study!
